Traffic Safety Improvements to be Installed on 6th Street

Los Angeles, CA -- Starting Saturday, January 13, the Los Angeles City Bureau of Street Services will begin repaving portions of 6th Street between La Brea and Fairfax Avenues in advance of the installation of new road improvements. The initial improvements include the installation of left hand turn pockets, continental crosswalks, the extension of the single eastbound traffic lane from Fairfax Avenue to Curson Avenue and the extension of red curbs to increase visibility for north and southbound traffic. These improvements received the greatest amount of support from the 712 residents that responded to a community survey released by  Councilmember David Ryu in October, 2017. Today, Councilmember Ryu released the following statement:

“After much discussion with the community and receiving over 700 responses to our 6th Street survey, I’m glad to see this work to improve traffic safety on 6th Street begin,” Councilmember Ryu said. “These sensible improvements will save lives, and are a direct response to the kinds of accidents we have been seeing on 6th Street.”

Repaving will begin on January 13th, starting at 6th Street and Fairfax Avenue. Both east and westbound lanes of 6th Street will be closed between Fairfax and Hauser Boulevard on January 13th and 14th between 6:30 AM and 4:00 PM to complete the first half of this work. The intersection of 6th Street and Fairfax Avenue will remain open.  On January 20th and 21st, both lanes of 6th Street between Hauser Boulevard and La Brea Avenue will be closed between 6:30 AM and 4:00 PM to complete the second half of this work.

Following the repaving, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation will be restriping and installing road improvements, including continental crosswalks at seven intersections along 6th Street between Fairfax and La Brea. A continental crosswalk, also known as a “zebra crossing” have repeated white bars which are more visible to pedestrians and motorists than the standard crosswalks currently on this portion of 6th Street. The new crosswalks will increase visibility and set the motorist limit line back to provide more room and security for pedestrians.

Further improvements have not yet been scheduled, but will be coming to this portion of 6th Street in 2018.
