Transportation Committee Passes Tour Bus Regulations, Heads to Full City Council

The dual motions introduced by Councilmember Ryu rein in the dangerous practices of rogue tour bus operators in Los Angeles

Los Angeles -- Today, the Transportation Committee passed two motions which, if approved, could bring new tour bus regulations to the City of Los Angeles. Councilmember Ryu introduced both motions after California Governor Jerry Brown signed AB25 (Nazarian) in September, which Councilmember Ryu championed as it worked its way through the Assembly. AB25 allows California municipalities more power to regulate tour bus operators. Today, Councilmember Ryu released the following statement:

"I am proud to see my colleagues on the Transportation Committee pass these much needed reforms for the tour bus industry, and put motorist, pedestrian and resident safety first.”

The two motions, introduced on September 29 of this year, require the use of headphones on all tour buses in Los Angeles, and instructs the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, with the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department to study which streets are unsafe for tour buses to drive on, and report back within 60 days with recommendations to restrict tour bus access.

“This has been an issue in my district for years. Every day, dozens of these tour buses wind up narrow hillside roads that simply were not built for this kind of use. I am thrilled that the Transportation Committee was able to act on these motions promptly, and I look forward to hearing them in full City Council.”

The motions now head to City Council for a full vote. Read the motions here.
