“We know that robust paid parental leave policies work to reduce unemployment, increase female participation in the labor force, and shrinking the wage gap which persists between male and female workers,” Councilmember Ryu said. “But this isn’t just about statistics and theory. This is about standing with the working parents of Los Angeles struggling to make a living and raise a family. This is about removing the barriers that are forcing parents to choose between parenthood and their livelihood. Los Angeles won’t wait around for the federal government - we’re ready to support working families now.”
The special joint committee meeting today included the Health, Education, Neighborhoods, Arts, Parks and River Committee (HENPAR), chaired by Councilmember Ryu, as well as the Economic Development Committee and the Ad hoc Committee on Comprehensive Job Creation. The joint committees approved the motion with instructions to the Chief Legislative Analyst and City Administrative Officer to initiate the process for commissioning an independent economic study of the proposed policy. The motion now heads to Council for a full vote.
