STATEMENT ON VACANT HOUSING MOTION

Los Angeles - Today, Councilmember Ryu co-introduced a motion on vacancy in the City of Los Angeles alongside Councilmembers Bonin, Harris-Dawson and Koretz. The motion seeks a comprehensive assessment of vacancy in Los Angeles, as well as avenues for penalizing landlords who hold housing units empty. The motion was introduced amidst a worsening affordable housing crisis in Los Angeles.

“We need to get serious about tackling our affordable housing crisis, and that means taking stock of every vacant unit in Los Angeles, and holding those who keep housing off the market to account,” Councilmember Ryu said. “We know that our City has more than enough luxury housing but not nearly enough affordable and moderate-income housing. What we need is a factual, data-driven picture of vacancy to understand our housing needs. I co-introduced this motion today because our City and our residents cannot afford to wait any longer.”
