STATEMENT ON HOMELESS COUNT RESULTS

Los Angeles - Today, the Los Angeles Homelessness Services Authority (LAHSA) released the 2018 Los Angeles Homeless Count numbers, and announced an increase in homelessness in Los Angeles City and County, despite placing 21,631 people into housing last year. Los Angeles County saw a rise in homelessness of 12% to 58,936, and the City of Los Angeles saw a 16% rise to 36,300.

“These numbers are sobering - but not surprising. The rise in homelessness here is exactly what is happening in cities across the State. This is a lopsided housing crisis that affects the working and middle class,” Councilmember Ryu said. “Last year, we placed 21,000 people into housing, with 7200 more units in the pipeline, and three homeless housing projects in Council District Four opening this year. But it is not enough - and it will never be enough until we stop the bleeding. We must take bold action to protect renters and solve our affordable housing crisis, and it won’t come from bills that call for even more luxury units. We need Sacramento to reform Costa Hawkins, reform the Ellis Act, and we need them to stop letting realtors and developers write our housing laws. Our City and State has more than enough luxury condos and high-income apartments - we need more affordable housing, and we need it now.”
