COUNCILMEMBER RYU STATEMENT ON AAGLA LAWSUIT

LOS ANGELES - Today, the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles took legal action against the City of Los Angeles for renter protections put in place during the coronavirus pandemic. The lawsuit seeks to undo an eviction moratorium and a freeze on rent increases for Rent-Stabilized, or RSO, apartments. Councilmember David Ryu, who authored the legislation to extend the RSO rent increase freeze for one year following the end of the local emergency order, released the following statement:

“Half of Los Angeles is out of work, food banks are seeing lines out their doors every day, and a worldwide pandemic shows no signs of slowing down. But apparently, there is no crisis big enough to stop the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles from trying to evict more people. The protections we passed, including my legislation to halt rent increases on RSO units for one year, are keeping people housed. The association's shameless attempt to strip renters of their rights during a pandemic is unacceptable. There are many landlords who work with their tenants and who understand the pain people are facing right now, and then there are those who go to court to argue for more displacement and homelessness. This lawsuit should be rejected in its entirety.”
