COUNCILMEMBER RYU ON JOSE HUIZAR ARREST

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Jose Huizar was arrested today on charges arising from an alleged pay-to-play scheme, in which he pressured real estate developers to make cash bribes, campaign donations, and other gifts in exchange for support of their projects.

"Jose Huizar's alleged crimes are stomach-turning. Instead of serving the best interests of our City, Huizar chose to enrich himself. He must be removed from City Council. This scheme is disgraceful, and I hope Huizar and anyone else involved faces swift justice - but that alone is not enough. This culture of corruption and pay-to-play politics has been allowed to fester in City Hall for far too long, and I'm sick and tired of putting forth ideas that are dismissed as going too far, too fast. How many more examples do we need until something changes? We need an Inspector General with the power to oversee, investigate and subpoena Councilmembers, especially over land use decisions. We need changes to our City Charter to remove the levers of power that City Councilmembers can exploit for their own personal gain. These are just some of the reforms I have put forward, and it's clear that they are far overdue."

Councilmember Ryu has been a fighter for reform and clean government since he first entered office in 2015. After numerous attempts, his ban on developer contributions was approved by City Council last year. In May of this year, he introduced more anti-corruption legislation, including an Office of Accountability and Transparency and City Charter reform. Those motions have not yet been scheduled.
