Ryu Praises New Statewide Tour Bus Law

Councilmember Ryu to Introduce Legislation to Adopt New Regulatory Authority in L.A.

Los Angeles -- Yesterday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 25 into law, which allows municipalities in California to pass new restrictions on tour bus operators, including requiring the use of headsets and  limiting which streets tour buses can operate on. Today, Councilmember Ryu released the following statement:

"I commend Assemblyman Nazarian on leading this issue in the State Assembly, and Governor Brown for signing it into law. It is an issue that I have been fighting to address since I entered office.

“AB25 gives cities like Los Angeles new abilities to regulate how tour buses operate: It allows for new limits on which streets tour buses can operate on based on public safety, and demands that open-air tour buses use headphones rather than disruptive sound systems.

“In the coming days, I plan to introduce legislation that would implement both - requiring the use of headsets on all open-air tour buses in Los Angeles, and asking LADOT to begin studying which streets these tour buses should be allowed to drive on.

“This has been a growing issue in my district for years. Tourism is a key ingredient to the Los Angeles economy, but rogue tour bus operators and their illegally modified vehicles pose a serious threat to tourists and everyday motorists alike. I am incredibly pleased to see the State of California give municipalities the power to take this issue on, and look forward to finally addressing it here in Los Angeles.”
