Safe Parking on Oxnard Street Moves Forward

LOS ANGELES - A safe parking lot first proposed by Councilmember David Ryu moved forward today, as a motion introduced by County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl to identify funding for converting the lot into safe parking was unanimously approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

“We need safe parking sites across our City for Angelenos living in their cars or RVs, and there are locations across Los Angeles that could be used,” Councilmember Ryu said. “This lot on Oxnard Street, which will provide support 24 hours a day, is just one example. I’m glad to see this Safe parking site move forward, and thankful to Senator Feinstein and Supervisor Kuehl for helping make it a reality.”

“Across LA county, over 16,000 people are living in their cars, with more than 50% of them living in RVs,” County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said. “The city and county Safe Parking Programs have successfully provided places for cars to park overnight as well as connecting those living in them to services and housing, but RVs, because they are so large, pose a special challenge. I’m excited about our launch of these programs for recreational vehicles and hope that this will be the first of several sites to come where people can safely park and receive services that will get them into permanent housing.”

The roughly 20,000 square foot lot, located at 15380 Oxnard Street, was proposed for safe parking by Ryu in February. It is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and on a long-term lease to the City of Los Angeles. Senator Dianne Feinstein helped facilitate an agreement between Los Angeles and the federal government to allow for a Safe Parking program on the lot. Supervisor Kuehl’s motion seeks a report back in 30 days with funding sources for the development of the lot as well as one year of operation as part of a Safe RV Pilot program.
