On Monday, October 17th, Eul Chur Ryu passed away due to a heart attack.
Eul Chur Ryu, 70, died of a heart attack on Monday, October 17, 2016, in Anyang, South Korea. He was born on December 26, 1945, in Chung Chun Bok Do, Yong Dong to Chil Sung Ryu (father) and Sam Neh Kwon (mother). In 1974 he married Michelle Won Chung Ryu in Seoul, South Korea. They were married for over 40 years and together raised three children, Joseph Ryu, Esther Ryu and David Ryu. Eul Chur earned a Bachelors of Science in Sociology from Seoul National University (Class of 1968) and a Masters in Sociology from Hongik University. He spent his career teaching civics and sociology at Seoul Kyung-Buk High School, Seoul Yeoido High School and the prestigious Seoul Arts High School. He immigrated to the United States in 1980 and served as Editor in Chief of the Korean Street Journal Newspaper based in Los Angeles. Eul Chur was a voracious reader, proud graduate of Dae Jeon High School (Class of 1964) and devoted congregant of Pyeong Cheon Jireh Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, children and two sisters, Gah-Bin Ryu and Rachel Chun-Hwa Ryu. Services will be privately held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Eul Chur Ryu’s name to the Korean National American Museum (3727 W. 6th Street, Suite #519, Los Angeles, CA, 90020).
