Councilmember Ryu Urges Support for Undocumented Californians

Letter to Governor Newsom supports State aid

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember David Ryu sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom today, urging him and the State Legislature to pass a comprehensive aid package for California’s undocumented immigrants as soon as possible. Last week, Governor Newsom announced he was considering aid for immigrants amid the Coronavirus pandemic, and working with State leaders on an economic relief plan to support them.

“Undocumented immigrants are taxpayers. They are the backbone of our economy. They are our neighbors and friends and they need our support,” Councilmember Ryu said. “Lacking documentation doesn’t make you any less likely to catch this virus, and excluding people from aid right now is an unspeakable cruelty. In California, we don’t leave anybody behind - and our State must act to help undocumented Californians.”

The latest federal aid package, which included a $600 a month increase to unemployment benefits and $1,200 checks for most Americans, excluded anyone without a Social Security Number, leaving many immigrants, including undocumented immgirants, without support. It’s estimated that more than 2 million undocumented immigrants live in California.
