COUNCILMEMBER RYU STATEMENT ON RACIST SEGMENT ON O'REILLY FACTOR
“As an Asian American and an immigrant, I am appalled and extremely disappointed in Fox News. The segment that was aired on October 3, 2016, was racist, bigoted, and divisive.
Fox News has a history of perpetuating stories that divide communities; yesterday’s segment was just another example of their insensitivity and ignorance of minority populations. It serves as a clear reminder of our need for greater understanding and representation of Asian Americans in every aspect of our society.
I understand firsthand because I have experienced racism throughout my entire life, even recently. It is imperative that we call out this hurtful and damaging behavior whenever it occurs.
I am demanding Fox News to issue an immediate apology and retraction for the Watters’ World: Chinatown segment. Additionally, Fox News executives must meet with representatives of the Asian American community to better understand the impacts of their poor judgment.
We must remind ourselves that our children are watching, and when they watch, they learn. We must teach our children to be loving, considerate, and understanding. It is our job as a society to protect them from hate and ignorance.”
