LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL RECOGNIZES THE 135TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT

The Act was the first federal law that excluded immigration of a single group of people based on race

Los Angeles, CA - Los Angeles City Councilmember David Ryu will recognize the 135th Anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act, the nation’s first law that excluded immigration of a single group of people based on race.

WHAT: 2017 marks the 135th Anniversary of the signing of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. The statute of 1882 Exclusion Act suspended Chinese immigration for ten years and declared Chinese individuals as ineligible for naturalization. The Act was renewed in 1892 for another ten years, and in 1902 Chinese immigration was made permanently illegal. This exclusion spurred later movements for immigration restriction against other immigrant groups such as Middle Easterners, Hindu and East Indians, and the Japanese.

The City Council adopted a Resolution identifying May 6, 2017, as a 'Day of Inclusion' to denounce the Chinese Exclusion Act and recognize the harm created by racially and religiously discriminatory immigration measures. Further, the Resolution calls for recognition of the contributions of all immigrants and refugees who have enriched our communities.

WHO: Councilmember David Ryu, Los Angeles Community College District Trustee Mike Eng, and the Chinese American Citizens Alliance

WHEN: Friday, May 26, 2017 | 10:00 AM

WHERE: Los Angeles City Hall, John Ferraro Council Chambers, Room 340, 200 North Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012
